{"id":723,"date":"2011-05-11T11:58:11","date_gmt":"2011-05-11T17:58:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mooreds.com\/wordpress\/?p=723"},"modified":"2011-05-11T11:58:54","modified_gmt":"2011-05-11T17:58:54","slug":"why-the-reverse-brain-drain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mooreds.com\/wordpress\/archives\/723","title":{"rendered":"Why the reverse brain drain?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Via a <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/SteveCase\/status\/68299524757667840\">retweet from Brad Feld<\/a>, I saw <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/tech\/news\/2011-05-10-tech-talents-leave-silicon-valley_n.htm\">this article<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is confusing to me.\u00a0 There is no hard data, but I&#8217;d like to explore why are people leaving the US to start companies back in the homeland.<\/p>\n<p>Is it because of:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li> visa issues<\/li>\n<li> the cost to build a company<\/li>\n<li> the economic opportunity in their home country<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If it is the first one, I&#8217;m in favor of reform, though I think there are a number of ways to encourage founders to stay, and tying their visa to VC funding, like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.startupvisa.com\/\">startup visa<\/a> does, doesn&#8217;t seem like an optimal strategy.<\/p>\n<p>If it is the second, then we need a cost benefits analysis.\u00a0 Making it easier to start companies is not an unalloyed good.\u00a0 For example, I wouldn&#8217;t want it to be easier to start a company that made cancer causing products.\u00a0 It&#8217;s harder to start a company in the US because we as a society have made choices that impose costs on companies.\u00a0 Ask the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/world\/article\/0,8599,2007319,00.html\">Chinese how it is to have ineffective regulation<\/a>.\u00a0 On the other hand, as outlined in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.feld.com\/wp\/archives\/2011\/05\/how-federal-government-can-help-entrepreneurship.html#disqus_thread\">comments here<\/a>, lowering risk for entrepeneurs (lack of health insurance!) could really lower costs for starting a company.<\/p>\n<p>If it is the last, then, good luck to them.\u00a0 Who can argue with the fact that Indian engineers are cheaper or that &#8220;there are no mature companies, like Google and Microsoft&#8221; in these countries?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Via a retweet from Brad Feld, I saw this article.
