{"id":712,"date":"2011-04-09T17:58:26","date_gmt":"2011-04-09T23:58:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mooreds.com\/wordpress\/?p=712"},"modified":"2011-04-09T17:58:26","modified_gmt":"2011-04-09T23:58:26","slug":"dualphone-3088-skype-phone-first-impressions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mooreds.com\/wordpress\/archives\/712","title":{"rendered":"DualPhone 3088 Skype Phone: first impressions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AKA, the internet eats the phone system, installment one.<\/p>\n<p>We recently bought a skype phone (having been inspired by <a href=\"http:\/\/matt.might.net\/articles\/switching-to-skype-to-save-money-on-cell-phone-bills\/\">this post<\/a>).\u00a0 We wanted to use our cell phones less (having been inspired by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Disconnect-Radiation-Industry-Protect-Family\/dp\/0525951946\">this book<\/a>), and Skype seemed like an alternative to the local telco (Qwest).\u00a0 Of course, it just increases our dependence on our local ISP (Comcast).\u00a0 Gotta love broadband duopolies.<\/p>\n<p>There was one requirement that made the phone relatively easy to choose.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It had to work without a computer being on.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t want to have to tie up a laptop or netbook for this phone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This criteria limits you to about three phone models.\u00a0 There are tons of phones that work as long as they are plugged into a computer (and they are cheaper too).\u00a0 After spending some time wandering through Amazon.com&#8217;s catalog (a local store was also called, and they didn&#8217;t have anything), we selected the <a href=\"http:\/\/dualphone.net\/DUALphone_3088_for_Skype-789.aspx\">DualPhone 3088<\/a>.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/RTX-RTX%C2%AE-Dualphone-3088\/dp\/B003O87364\">Amazon page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Impressions from using this phone for about a month.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It was easy to set up&#8211;I just created another skype account and set it up for some subscriptions.<\/li>\n<li>The phone service is pretty good, though it has cut out a couple of times in use.\u00a0 Of course, having AT&amp;T as a cell phone provider, this is something we&#8217;re used to.<\/li>\n<li>The phone feels cheap.\u00a0 The handset is light and not quite full sized.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The economics are powerful, though.\u00a0 A full subscription to skype (Skype In, so that others can call us, and Skype Out, so that we can call regular phone numbers) is around 9 bucks a month.\u00a0 As we cut back our cell phone minutes, we&#8217;ll see whether a Skype phone is a full blown solution.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AKA, the internet eats the phone system, installment one.
