{"id":595,"date":"2010-07-16T08:24:27","date_gmt":"2010-07-16T14:24:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mooreds.com\/wordpress\/?p=595"},"modified":"2010-07-16T08:55:50","modified_gmt":"2010-07-16T14:55:50","slug":"should-google-share-its-index","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mooreds.com\/wordpress\/archives\/595","title":{"rendered":"Should Google share its index?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/almaer.com\/\">Dion Almaer<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/dalmaer\/status\/18660631587\">points<\/a> to an interesting article about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.siliconvalleywatcher.com\/mt\/archives\/2010\/07\/google_exec_say.php\">search engine indices,\u00a0 proposing they be shared across search engines<\/a>.\u00a0 The article is worth a read, but the points are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>bots use a tremendous amount of bandwidth across the internet<\/li>\n<li>they all get the same pages; the value is in their algorithms<\/li>\n<li>therefore, the capacity of the internet would be increased if a company were to make their index available for all search engines to use<\/li>\n<li>Google has the largest index, therefore it might be best if they did the sharing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I think there are a couple of issues with this scenario, but the largest is that having the biggest index is a competitive advantage for Google&#8211;why would they give that up merely to free up internet bandwidth that isn&#8217;t costing Google a penny?
