{"id":573,"date":"2010-02-18T11:13:52","date_gmt":"2010-02-18T17:13:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mooreds.com\/wordpress\/archives\/000573"},"modified":"2010-02-18T11:13:52","modified_gmt":"2010-02-18T17:13:52","slug":"andrew-hyde-tips-for-your-startup-job-hunt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mooreds.com\/wordpress\/archives\/573","title":{"rendered":"Andrew Hyde: tips for your startup job hunt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Andrew Hyde, Boulder startup hub, gives <a href=\"http:\/\/andrewhy.de\/resumes-for-startups\/\">some tips on the startup job process<\/a>.\u00a0 Having been a part of a few startups, I thought I&#8217;d review the high points of the list, but it&#8217;s worth a read regardless.<\/p>\n<p>Lots of his tips are useful to people hunting for jobs at established companies as well&#8211;I&#8217;ve long been a believer in personal blogging (#12) as a &#8216;living resume&#8217; (among its other benefits), and the research required to write a blog post about the company (#10) will be useful to you as well.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s another <a href=\"http:\/\/arinewman.com\/2009\/01\/7-tips-for-boulder-start-up-scene\/\">post with good tips<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I especially enjoyed his riff on generalists: &#8220;In the history of startups, not a single \u2018generalist\u2019 has ever been  hired.\u00a0 They are called founders.&#8221; I&#8217;m not sure I entirely agree, but I do think that if you want to be hired for money at a startup, you should have a strong focus (whether that be development, marketing, sales, operations, etc, etc).\u00a0 However, even if you are hired as, say, a developer, you&#8217;ll need to do other things (testing, customer service, perhaps even marketing)&#8211;that&#8217;s part of the fun.<\/p>\n<p>He does give some contradictory advice: have a resume in PDF (#2) but at the same time &#8220;ditch a resume&#8221; (#8).\u00a0 I think he means that while a resume is nice, startups are more interested in specific projects and achievements than a typical big company with an HR department.\u00a0 Some argue <a href=\"http:\/\/asktheheadhunter.com\/basics5.htm\">one should approach all job interviews in the same manner<\/a>.<br \/>\nThe most important piece of advice that Andrew gives is #7, which is worth quoting in full:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Be clear.\u00a0 You are looking for a job.\u00a0 Cut the buzzswords, what is the  best fit?\u00a0 Steady?\u00a0 Fast paced?\u00a0 Live in Boulder?\u00a0 Just say it.\u00a0 Cut the  shit.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In my job hunts, knowing what I actually wanted was the hardest task, but the most important.\u00a0 Why is it hard?\u00a0 When I&#8217;ve been looking for a job, I am anxious and concerned about the future, often thinking about my slowly draining savings.\u00a0 Declaring what I actually want (beyond &#8220;a job, any job, please God, give me a job&#8221; which is sometimes how I feel \ud83d\ude42 ) necessarily excludes opportunities.\u00a0 However, that is the exact reason that it is the most important task.\u00a0 By excluding opportunities that wouldn&#8217;t be a good fit, or would make me bitter, or wouldn&#8217;t serve the employer well, I freed myself up to focus on situations where I could help the employer succeed and be happy.<\/p>\n<p>[tags]startup jobs[\/tags]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Andrew Hyde, Boulder startup hub, gives some tips on the startup job process.\u00a0 Having been a part of a few startups, I thought I&#8217;d review the high points of the [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[26],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-573","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-jobs"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.mooreds.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/573","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.mooreds.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.mooreds.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.mooreds.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.mooreds.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=573"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.mooreds.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/573\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.mooreds.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=573"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.mooreds.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=573"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.mooreds.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=573"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
