{"id":2438,"date":"2017-06-07T13:42:02","date_gmt":"2017-06-07T19:42:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mooreds.com\/wordpress\/?p=2438"},"modified":"2017-06-07T13:42:56","modified_gmt":"2017-06-07T19:42:56","slug":"aws-questions-sqs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mooreds.com\/wordpress\/archives\/2438","title":{"rendered":"AWS Questions: SQS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More questions, this time about SQS, the simple queue service that AWS provides.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What was the first AWS service?\n<ul>\n<li>SQS was! \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/jeff-barr.com\/2014\/08\/19\/my-first-12-years-at-amazon-dot-com\/\">Launched in 2004<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Are there upper limits on limits on SQS\u00a0in terms of message\/second?\n<ul>\n<li>FIFO Queues <a href=\"http:\/\/docs.aws.amazon.com\/AWSSimpleQueueService\/latest\/SQSDeveloperGuide\/FIFO-queues.html\">have a limit<\/a> (300\/s), but I wasn&#8217;t able to file any hard limits for standard SQS. \u00a0In the developer guide they have <a href=\"http:\/\/docs.aws.amazon.com\/AWSSimpleQueueService\/latest\/SQSDeveloperGuide\/throughput.html\">some examples<\/a> that reach 2500 messages\/second. \u00a0I found some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.warski.org\/blog\/2014\/06\/benchmarking-sqs\/\">benchmarks from 2014<\/a>, which were able to get to 108k messages\/second.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Can you create alarms based on the number of messages in a queue?\n<ul>\n<li>Yes, that is a metric that <a href=\"http:\/\/docs.aws.amazon.com\/AWSSimpleQueueService\/latest\/SQSDeveloperGuide\/sqs-available-cloudwatch-metrics.html\">Cloudwatch tracks<\/a>: &#8220;NumberOfMessagesSent&#8221;. \u00a0You can use this in combination with an auto scaling group to handle batch processes in a dynamic manner (scale out when you have more work in the queue, scale in when you have less).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>What is the maximum visibility timeout for SQS?\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/docs.aws.amazon.com\/AWSSimpleQueueService\/latest\/APIReference\/API_ChangeMessageVisibility.html\">12 hours<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More questions, this time about SQS, the simple queue service that AWS provides.
