{"id":2423,"date":"2017-05-10T15:37:34","date_gmt":"2017-05-10T21:37:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mooreds.com\/wordpress\/?p=2423"},"modified":"2017-05-10T15:37:34","modified_gmt":"2017-05-10T21:37:34","slug":"aws-questions-ebs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mooreds.com\/wordpress\/archives\/2423","title":{"rendered":"AWS Questions: EBS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So, more questions about AWS from students (and my own research\/curiosity):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>W<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hat happens when general purpose ebs volumes run out of credit because you&#8217;ve used too many IOPS?<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/docs.aws.amazon.com\/AWSEC2\/latest\/UserGuide\/EBSVolumeTypes.html\">Your disk performance reverts to the baseline performance<\/a>: &#8220;If your gp2 volume uses all of its I\/O credit balance, the maximum IOPS performance of the volume will remain at the baseline IOPS performance level (the rate at which your volume earns credits) and the volume&#8217;s maximum throughput is reduced to the baseline IOPS multiplied by the maximum I\/O size.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Before you take a snapshot you should quiesce the disk. \u00a0Can you do that via an AWS command?\n<ul>\n<li>You need to use whatever operating system or application command is recommended. \u00a0You can use <a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/ec2\/run-command\/\">EC2Run<\/a>\u00a0to execute that command, but you must determine what that command is. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/d0.awsstatic.com\/whitepapers\/Storage\/Backup_and_Recovery_Approaches_Using_AWS.pdf\">From the backup and recovery whitepaper<\/a>: &#8220;For this reason, you must quiesce the file system or database in order to make a clean backup. The way in which you do this depends on your database or file system. &#8221; \u00a0Note also that the quiescing of the disk can be for only a few seconds, as the EBS snapshot process can be started quickly, though it may take a while to complete.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Can you be notified of snapshot completion via an event or do you have to poll?\n<ul>\n<li>You can use <a href=\"http:\/\/docs.aws.amazon.com\/AWSEC2\/latest\/UserGuide\/ebs-cloud-watch-events.html\">cloudwatch events to be notified<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Can you automate your EBS snapshots?\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/docs.aws.amazon.com\/AmazonCloudWatch\/latest\/events\/TakeScheduledSnapshot.html\">Yes<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Does EBS encryption cost extra?\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/about-aws\/whats-new\/2014\/05\/21\/Amazon-EBS-encryption-now-available\/\">Nope<\/a>: &#8220;This frequently requested feature provides you with seamless support for data encryption on block-level storage, at no additional cost.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So, more questions about AWS from students (and my own research\/curiosity): What happens when general purpose ebs volumes run out of credit because you&#8217;ve used too many IOPS?
