{"id":1944,"date":"2015-01-19T09:36:13","date_gmt":"2015-01-19T15:36:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mooreds.com\/wordpress\/?p=1944"},"modified":"2015-01-07T09:22:03","modified_gmt":"2015-01-07T15:22:03","slug":"twitter-as-conversation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mooreds.com\/wordpress\/archives\/1944","title":{"rendered":"Twitter as conversation"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"Tweet Up by MDGovpics\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mooreds.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/6756420231_7d45a5abdf_q_tweet.jpg\" alt=\"tweet photo\" width=\"150\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><small>Photo by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/64018555@N03\/6756420231\" target=\"_blank\">MDGovpics<\/a> <a title=\"Attribution License\" href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/2.0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mooreds.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-inject\/images\/cc.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/small><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I confess, I&#8217;ve been guilty of using twitter as a broadcast only mechanism.\u00a0 I have two main accounts and one of them is purely broadcast (I use tumblr to post links to Twitter and a Facebook business page&#8211;<a href=\"\/wordpress\/archives\/1832\">more on that experience<\/a>).\u00a0 But, inspired by <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.semilshah.com\/2014\/12\/25\/quick-lessons-from-pmarcas-2014-on-twitter\/\">this analysis of Marc Andreesen&#8217;s tweets during 2014<\/a>, I was inspired to start using Twitter as a way to have conversation.\u00a0 As of late December,\u00a0 I&#8217;m committed to responding to at least one tweet when I open up Twitter.\u00a0 Not a retweet, not a favorite, but an honest to god reply.<\/p>\n<p>So far, I&#8217;ve enjoyed this.\u00a0 If someone is tweeting out an article, it forces me to read the article critically.\u00a0 If someone says something provocative, I can respond with a question.\u00a0 I have started to unfollow people who just post links (like I did) because I&#8217;m looking for conversation.\u00a0 Seeking conversation gets addictive pretty quickly.<\/p>\n<p>The downside is that this takes more time.\u00a0 Not much more (it&#8217;s only 140 characters after all) but more time.\u00a0 Frankly, it can also be a bit scary to yell your opinion to the whole world (or at least that subsection of the world that is on Twitter and is reading your tweets, which is much smaller).\u00a0 I do that on this blog all the time, but responses on Twitter are far less polished.<\/p>\n<p>I know this is old hat to many Twitter users, but it is a new paradigm to me.
