{"id":1666,"date":"2014-09-10T08:12:02","date_gmt":"2014-09-10T14:12:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mooreds.com\/wordpress\/?p=1666"},"modified":"2014-09-09T07:35:41","modified_gmt":"2014-09-09T13:35:41","slug":"headline-android-user-buys-app","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mooreds.com\/wordpress\/archives\/1666","title":{"rendered":"Headline: Android User Buys App"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"Cash register in Museum - Cameron Highland by liewcf\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mooreds.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/2427194598_cd5e84e22d_m_cash-register.jpg\" alt=\"cash register photo\" width=\"240\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><small>Photo by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/34353636@N00\/2427194598\" target=\"_blank\">liewcf<\/a> <a title=\"Attribution-ShareAlike License\" href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/2.0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mooreds.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-inject\/images\/cc.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/small><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A few weeks ago, I bought my first app on <a href=\"http:\/\/play.google.com\/\">Google Play<\/a>.\u00a0 Wait?\u00a0 I thought <a href=\"http:\/\/www.intomobile.com\/2013\/07\/18\/shocking-revelation-android-users-least-likely-pay-apps\/\">Android users don&#8217;t buy apps<\/a>?\u00a0 Well, what can I say, I like to break the mold.<\/p>\n<p>Actually, I think I&#8217;m pretty typical for a high end Android phone owner.\u00a0 I have had an Android phone since 2010&#8211;I paid hundreds of dollars for each of my phones.\u00a0 My wife is a diehard iPhone owner.\u00a0 At the time I purchased, she wondered why I wanted to buy an Android.\u00a0 <a href=\"\/wordpress\/archives\/890\">The application process for writing apps<\/a> is one reason, and another is being able to write an app, on whatever computer I wanted, and install it on my phone.\u00a0 Now I&#8217;m in Google&#8217;s ecosystem, and it would take a lot to pull me out of it.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, I finally bought an app!\u00a0 I was looking for music on my phone, and have long been a fan of <a href=\"http:\/\/somafm.com\/\">soma fm<\/a>, ever since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jargo\">John Argo<\/a> introduced me to them&#8211;about a decade ago.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/somafm.com\/groovesalad\/\">Groove Salad<\/a> is excellent for doing development.\u00a0 I looked up their app, and it was $4.\u00a0 soma fm is one of those organizations that I&#8217;ve been meaning to contribute to for years (like <a href=\"http:\/\/kgnu.org\/\">KGNU<\/a>, they are listener supported and commercial free), but never got over the hump.<\/p>\n<p>This was my chance to support the radio station which I loved!\u00a0 Google made it easy&#8211;just had to enter a billing method (options included credit card, paypal, and bill to my phone account) and re-enter my password.\u00a0 (Yes, I realize this was a small donation in the scheme of things.\u00a0 The app has convenient links to the donation page.<\/p>\n<p>So, what does this anecdote mean for people looking to make a living selling apps?<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t count on me, because the only app I&#8217;ve ever paid for was because it was a donation.<\/p>\n<p>I had a long conversation with a friend about this and it appears to me that mobile apps are, in the vast majority of cases, complements to existing businesses, and not businesses themselves.\u00a0 That was my experience at 8z as well.
