Yahoo Ads

As you may have noticed, especially if you use an RSS reader, I've installed Yahoo Ads beta program on some of my pages. For the next few months, I plan to run Yahoo Ads on the individual article pages, as well as my popular JAAS tutorial.

I've not done anything like this before, but since I write internet software, and pay per click advertising is one of the main ways that such software makes money, I thought it'd be an interesting experiment. Due to the dictatorial Term and Conditions, I probably won't comment on any other facets of the ads in the future....

Please feel free to comment if you feel that the ads are unspeakably gauche--can't say I've been entirely happy with their targeting.

Hi Dan,

I wondered how you decided on using Yahoo Ads vs Google Adwords?

Will you let us know what you think about managing your Yahoo Ads account?

The advertising experience isn't detracting from my blog viewing experience, but I don't see them in the blog yet ;)

I looked at how/what types of ads showed up in the JAAS tutorial and thought they seemed pretty much on target, except the one about "Java Chests" from Target.com :)

The layout looks good too.

Addendum to my last post:
When I looked at an individual blog entry, no ads were at top, though there was a blank space where they probably should have gone. Then when I reviewed my posted comment, the ads did show up at top...

Hey Susan,

Sure, I'll be happy to share my experiences. Setting up Yahoo! ads was very easy. The contextual nature of the ads has been lacking, but that could be because of the low traffic nature of my site, or because it's a beta program. You mentioned blank space above the post, and I've seen that too. I'm not sure why that happens--it is a beta program, so I'm relatively forgiving.

I went with Yahoo! rather than Google because as far as I can tell they're pretty much the same thing, and I thought I'd give the upstart a chance.

As for revenue, I'll probably make enough to pay for hosting, but not much more.
